Understanding your results

Once your file is processed, capi.tax opens a results screen organised into a few tabs. This page is a plain tour of what each part shows, so you know where to look and what the numbers mean.

The summary

The overview gives you the headline figures for the year:

  • Gross result — your total gain or loss before any tax relief is applied.
  • Taxable amount — what remains after partial exemptions, such as the Teilfreistellung for equity funds.
  • Estimated tax — a rough figure for the tax that would fall due, including the solidarity surcharge.

Treat the estimate as a guide. The tax that actually applies depends on how gains and losses are offset across categories.

The category breakdown

Below the summary, your results are grouped by the categories German tax law uses: stocks, derivatives (options and futures), dividends, and interest. Each category shows its gross amount, any exemption, and the taxable part. Keeping them separate matters because losses can only be offset within certain limits — this is the Verlustverrechnung.

The transaction list

Here you find every tax-relevant trade in date order, with the amount in euros and the gain or loss. Open any sale to see which earlier purchases it was matched against under the FIFO method, along with the holding period. Hovering over a euro amount shows the Bundesbank rate used for that date.

The audit trail

This view shows how completely your file was processed. It lists the sales that were matched to a purchase, the positions that are still open (and so do not affect this year's tax), and items that were set aside as not taxable. If a sale could not be matched, it appears here so nothing is hidden.

The KAP values

A dedicated tab gives you the figures ready to copy into your Anlage KAP, mapped to the line numbers the tax office expects — for interest, dividends, fund income, stock and derivative gains and losses, and foreign withholding tax.

Fixing something

If the audit trail shows an unmatched sale, or a security is in the wrong tax category, the Adjustments screen lets you add the missing opening position or reclassify the security. Each change is recorded with a reason and the figures are recalculated.
